Traffic Violations

Traffic violations are a common occurrence and it is likely that you or someone you know has received a citation. Unfortunately, a traffic ticket in North Carolina can be a serious ordeal. How you handle the citation plays a significant role in minimizing long term consequences. Our goal is to reduce or completely eliminate the financial impact of your traffic citation.

Paying the Ticket = Guilty

When you receive a traffic citation, you are ordered to appear in court on a certain date and time.  Court appearances may be waived for many offenses, but may require that you plead guilty and pay your fine.  A guilty plea typically results in a conviction of your violation.  Serious offenses may not be waived and will require a court appearance.  If you do not appear, a judge may order that you be arrested.

Traffic Tickets Cost More Than You Think

Depending on the circumstance, a traffic violation may impact your budget and/or affect your driving privileges.  In addition to fines and court costs, you may receive DMV and insurance points against your driving record.  DMV points may jeopardize your driving privileges via license suspension or revocation.  Insurance premiums may increase dramatically as a result of insurance point accumulation.  A single insurance point can increase your insurance premium by 25%.  A single traffic incident may count several DMV and/or insurance points against your record and accumulate over a three-year period.

There’s Help!

You have legal rights that may help eliminate or mitigate the long term ramifications of your traffic citations.  The Jaimes Law Office understands the impact a traffic citation creates on your personal life and finances.  In most cases, our firm may represent you without the need for you to appear in court.  If your license has already been suspended or revoked, we may still be able to help.  In some cases we are able to get our clients a limited driving privilege.  A deferral program or driving school may help with the reduction of a charge.  A Prayer for Judgement Continued (PJC) may help avoid points against your license.  However, a PJC may also be treated similar to a conviction depending on the circumstance.  The Jaimes Law Office will communicate openly and present to you all possible options.
